Snowfall, Winter and Christmastime

The title of this post describes perfectly the tenure of this post, and Yes, for me it's Christmastime. It's not "the holidays" it's Merry Christmas. I will not suffer the absurdities of political correctness, my country was built on the back of Christianity; more precisely, Catholisism and the Holy Roman Catholic Church. I am not a practising Catholic and I definitly don't believe most of the teachings of the Holy See, but I won't ignore tradition and history. Regardless of the bad press and abhorrent thing the Church has done, my ancestors believed in Christ and they followed the teachings of the church in building this country and applied their faith in their daily life and traditions. So it's Christmas, period. For you it may be the holidays or Kwanza or Hanukkah, whatever you may call it, for me and my family it's Christmas, regardless of religion.

This morning we have the first real snow of the season. A thick, fluffy white blanket cover the trees, the ground and "my car". I won't pretend to live winter, but the beauty is undeniable. A certain calm and warmth takes over, every year at this time and I must admit, it's a great time of year for me. Would rather be on the beach sipping Mojitos, but I chose to live in the great white north and have to make due with the life I have chosen.

Many of my neighbors and acquiantances live the winter life to the fullest. I see them outside snowmobiling, playing hockey, etc... For me the snow brings snowboarding and skiing. One of the only joys I get out the 4-5 months of cold and snow is hitting the slopes. My parents taught me to ski at a very early age (seriously, I could barely walk). We lived in the mountains and skiing was a second nature to my sisters and I quickly became quite a good skier. In the early '90's I took up snowboarding and I now alternate between skiing and snowboarding, depending where I go for some downhill runs. Obviously, with my bad back, I have to limit my outings and although being a great, fun sport it is very expensive. First, there are no ski resort iut where I am living so going skiing is not always an option, what with the price of gas. Food prices at the ski hill is usually 60-80% more expensive than elsewhere too. Regardless, I manage to go out at least two or three times a year, Which is more that sufficent considering my aments.

Last week I put up our traditional wreath and cleaned up the house for xmas. Made some room for the tree, clean out the fidge and freezer, made some meat pies and canned some crannberries. Luckily, dec. 1st is a saturday this year and, as always, i will be breaking out the cristmeas music and spend the day writing xmas cards and sendjng out pictures to my parents and friends. Exceptionally, this year, I am driving out on xmas day to visit my father in Mt-Tremblant, and will probably go skiing at Mont Blanc. I am taking the whole week of xmas off from work to have some fun with my son and we will probably spend a few days skiing, tubing and getting our fill of some fresh winter air, before the ling dark months of the deep winter.

In the last coiple of years the winters have actually been quite mild and pleasant. But the short days tend to wreak havic on the winter fun time, and you never jnow when uou might wake up to -40 degrees. There are usually a few weeks in january and february when the weather is coldest before a warming up towards spring around mid march. I won't jide it, heating costs bring me to my knees and it's not uncommon for me to have a 2500$ elctric bill roll in come march ir april.

So, for now, let's just enjoy the cool white stuff falling from the sky, look pleasantly forward to a great christmastime and a few days of RR, instead of dwelling on the agony of the dead cold.

Choosing the right smartphone

I've been going back and forth, looking at different models of phones to replace my ageing iPhone 4. Let's be honest, I am a tough user of smartphones. I work and play hard, and I tend to abuse my devices quite a bit. For example, I've had to replace my iPhone LCD three times in 2012. This not because it is fragile or easy to break, like I said I play hard. I've also had to replace the home button, the dock connector and the ear phone jack, and recently I changed out the vibrator, phone speaker and rear camera. Basically, other than the motherboard and battery, there is very little of my original iPhone left.

My contract isn't up for renewal but the penalty has reached a low enough amount that it is reasonable for me to start considering changing my phone. Several choices exist and the smartphone landscape has changed considerably since I purchased my first smartphone (or superphone) and, in the past few weeks I've tried out several different phones. Here are my reviews, based on my needs and tastes.

IPhone 5 : The iPhone 5 is a great phone, it sports a large 4 inch screen, a fast processor, an improved ruby lense rear camera, a robust metal frame & back and powerful speakers. The new interface jack is called lightening and is easier to use that the old 30 pin jack of earlier models. iOS 6, despite early bugs, is super fast and manages system ressources effectively. There are some cons also; the width of the phone is disproportionate to it's height, the earphone jack is at the bottom (i'll explain this in another post) and the back cover is easily scratched and dented (remember, I am rough on my toys).

Samsung Galaxy s3: A great phone overall, sporty design with a large 4.8 inch screen (with gorilla glass), a powerful rear and front camera, great battery life, good speakers and a USB power port... Compared to the iPhone the speed, interaction, keyboard and OS (Android JB) are very similar in quality and useability. It, also, has some cons; the most major and the reason I will not be getting an S3, IT IS PLASTIC. WTF, why would they make a plastic phone, shit.

New Blackberry: Well what can I say, we know nothing of these phones, other than BB10, which looks awesome on the Dev Alpha (developper phone). There has been no leaks about what the new phones will look like, no information about the phone(s) whatsoever. I assume it will be an awesome phone, though. The cons; RIM is fading fast, there is no guarantee they will be around in 2,3 or 5 years. Also, app developpers have pretty much dropped the BB plateform and I do not foresee they will return.

 Windows Phone : All brands using Windows operating plateform are off the table. Microsoft sucks, has sucked, and will suck, period. I haven't used a windows PC in 6 years and will not endorse this mega corp that gouges users, delevoppers and businesses. No Way.

So, i suppose you've guessed already, I will be going with an iPhone, again. It's not set in stone, i might wait another 6 months to see if the landscape changes again; maybe RIM will impress and make a comeback, perhaps not.

Facebook est gratuit, et le restera toujours

En réponse a tous les 'post' sur le mega site Facebook, je tiens a vous informer d'une vérité certaine. Facebook est gratuit et sera toujours gratuit pour les utilisateurs, point.

Cela fait plusieurs années que la rumeur cours, avec quelques variantes, que Facebook est sur le point de devenir payant. C'est faux. En 2009 le conseil d'administrateurs de Facebook (et Mark Zuckerberg) ont décidés d'inclure un nouvelle politique dans leur model d'affaire; Facebook est gratuit et le sera toujours. D'ailleurs, ils en ont fait leur slogan officiel (en anglais) : Facebook is free and always will be.

Il serait imprudent, voir idiot, de faire de Facebook un site payant. La gratuité de Facebook pour les utilisateurs demeure la force qui fait de Facebook un si grand succes. Les utilisateurs forment le plus grand noyaux de lecteurs de nouvelles publictaires dans l'histoire du monde. En quelques clics, un promoteur peut acceder a la vaste banque de données de Facebook pour cibler sa clientèle de façon sûr et efficace, sans se soucier des pubs perdus, comme dans les medias traditionels. Une pub Facebook peut etre taillée a la clientèle de ses competiteurs, afin d'aller chercher une plus grande part du marché; sans effort, dans des marchès qui etaits, autrefous inacdessibles. Les revnues de ce géant du marketing reposent sur le fait qu'il existe presque un (1) milliard d'utilisateurs qui visitent régulierement le site.

Donc, une fois pour toute, FACEBOOK EST GRATUIT ET LE RESTERAS TOUJOURS.

The Walking Dead

Any number of you, who follow me on Facebook, know that I am a great fan of The Walking Dead; by Frank Darabont, on AMC TV. I read every issue of The Walking Dead in comics, I have every issue on my Motorola Xoom tablet and I have every TV episode from Season 1 Ep01 thru Season 3.

As a fan of the series, I have a large collection of pictures, articles and other stuff all related to the show and the comics, and I often share on FB. My favorite character is, without a doubt, Sofia, who was "turned" late in Season 2 and was killed by Rick (Grimes) in an epic faceoff between the survivors and a hoard of Walkers being held captive in the Barn at the Farm. My least favorite charcter is Merle, the older brother of Daryl; who was handcuffed to a rooftop in Atlanta at the onset of Season 1. Miraculously, Merle returns in Season 3.

As a diehard fan, I alweays look forward to new episodes and so far, i've been relatively unimpressed with the continuity in Season 3. Despite grand scenes and very emotional sequences (Lori's death, Rick's downfall, the hacking of Herchel's leg and others) i find the layout of the plot in Season 3 lacks momentum and often lags; especially during the scenes with the Governor, Nichonne and Merle.

Here's hoping that the rest of the Season will pick up the pace and get to the thick of things soon. 

Floating Ped Day

Funny how so much has changed in just 30 years. I don't think we ever had floating Ped Days when I was a kid. All ped days were determined at the begining of school year by the School Board and the calendar went home with us in the first day if school.

The new method is a serious handicap for parents, since the notice goes out the week before, and; if your child is anything like my son, you never hear about it, until the morning of they day in question. At that point it is obviously much too latd for daycare or a day off, so you either call in sick and lie to your boss or you tell the truth and lose a days' salary.
In all fairness, i don't blame the school. The problem is much higher up, i'd even go further than the School Board. The problem is with the system that allows floating ped days. At a minimum the SB or the school itself should mail a notice or send it out weeks in advance.

Rambling on wot because it does not concern me, since my son is at an age where he can stay home alone w/o worries. All the same it's worth the ponder.

Le virage a GAUCHE

Plusieurs d'entre vous pensente, presentement que je parle peut-etre de la politique et du virage a GAUCHE de la droite populaire. Et bien; NON. Je parle des imbeciles qui ne commprennent pas  que quand on tourne a gauche a une lumiere de traffic, il y en a d'autres qui sont, eux, en train de tourner a droite. C'est fort simple, quand on tourne a une intersection on dirige notre auot (camion, moto, cheval, VTT) dans la VOIE LA PLUS PROCHE. Donc si je tourne a gauche a une intersection, je me tasse dans la voie de GAUCHE, sur le chemin. Parce-que; le mec (ou la femme) qui tourne a droite (ou qui tourne a gauche en contre-sens) a besoin de SA place lui aussi.

Le plus imbecile c'est ceux qui bloquent le traffic a attendre que làutre vehicule ai passe pour aller tout a fait de l'autre cote dans la voie de droite....

Sandy, la vie, la misere et la mort

Tout le monde est au courant, Sandy; cet ouragan de fin de saison, a dévasté la cote est Américaine. Des dizaines, voir une centaine, ont péris dans l'emprise de cette tempête monstre, que les météos ont nomme le "FrankenStorm". Les états du nord est des États-Unis ont mangés toute une claque, et plusieurs millions souffrent encore 10 jours plus tard.

Un quartier complet (plus de 80 demeures) a été détruit par le feu a Breezy Point, dans l’état de New York. Des communautés entieres sont dévastées par les inondations causes par une marée monstre dans le New Jersey. A lui seul l’état de New York estime les dommages a plus de 33 Milliards de $ US; pensez-y, 33B$....

Dans son sillage Sandy a laissée derrière elle 133 morts dans les Caraïbes, au USA et au Canada (incroyable mais vrai, une dame a perdu la vie a Toronto, plus de 1000Km de la cote). Des millions (7.5M) de gens ont étés affectes directement et plus de 30M ont étés touches par les soubresauts de cette tempête historique.

Plusieurs gens demeurent encore a cette date sans électricité, sans eau courante, sans nourriture, en manque de chaleur (chauffage) et plusieurs ne peuvent aller travailler a cause des routes fermées, inondées ou simplement plus la. La misère s'acharne encore sur leurs sort, puisque en plus, un 'Noreaster c'est abattu sur leur tête hier et a laisse plus de 60cm de neige au sol dans certaines villes. Alors comme dit le vieux dicton, quand la merde frappe, la merde frappe fort. Et cette année, la merde frappe souvent et très, très fort.

Alors voila, moi, dans mon petit village des Hautes Laurentides (ok, ok, Mont-Laurier est une ville) je regarde tout ça sur CNN ou CBS, j’emmagasine le tout, bien a l'abri dans mon petit chez-nous. La vie continue, je vais au travail, je mange au resto, je fait mon magasinage de noël. Ce samedi, je vais a un mariage. Pendant ce temps, l’Amérique souffre; mes cousins et cousines meurent de l'autre cote de la frontière. La vie est dur dur pour eux, pour moi c'est une curiosité, une acte qui me concerne, pas envers lequel je n'y peux rien. J'aimerais bien aider, mais mon quotidien s'impose, ma situation est la même; métro, boulot, dodo.

Je me réserve le droit de penser que ça sera peut-être mon tour un jour, peut-être qu'ils nous regarderons avec les mêmes pensées, sans pouvoir aider. J'aimerais croire que dans mon moment de besoin, il y auras de l'aide, des gens viendrons rebâtir ce que nous avons perdu, fort probablement que non.

Dans tout les cas, ils disent que c'est la pensée qui compte, peu de confort une pensée quand tu a faim, quand tu a froid, quand tu a peur. La vie est si incertaine dans le meilleurs des cas, le seul absolu; nous mourrons tous un jours, pourquoi pas demain?

Un voyage pour une bouchee de pain

Alors, pour garder ma parole, j’écris ici un petit expose sur le financement des voyage parascolaires. Pour la deuxième fois je participe de manière périphérique au financement du voyage a New York de la Polyvalente Saint-Joseph de Mont-Laurier; en achetant (et en mangeant) du pain.

Une de mes copines, vends du pain pour le voyage de fils au Big Apple, la semaine du 9 décembre. Les fonds ramassés serviront a faire vivre une expérience unique aux étudiants dans la Ville qui ne dors jamais. Mais je me questionne, d'accord; le pain vendu ira a payer l'autobus, l’hôtel et peut-être certains repas, mais quoi du reste? Les sortis, resto, boutiques et souvenirs? Combien ça peux bien couter a chaque enfant ( plutôt aux parents) et combien d'enfants ne pourrons se permettre ce luxe? Qu'arrive t-il aux familles qui on deux enfants ou plus en fin de secondaire?

Le fardeau financier, juste avant noël est énorme, surtout pour des familles qui ne peuvent déjà pas se payer du luxe pour noël. Combien de familles font se ruiner a envoyer leurs enfants pour un voyage qui, bien que amusant, n'est pas nécessaire? A quel point-ils s'engager pour que leur enfants puissent participer. Heures supplémentaires, deuxième emploi, emprunts, cartes de crédit... Bref a quel prix vont-il faire plaisir a leurs rejetons?

Résurection du Blog

Voila pres de deux ans que je n'ai pas écrit dans ce blogspot. Manque de temps, d'inspiration et paresse générale; surement, comme a chaque fois, je me motive pour remettre mes idéees dans la blogosphere en me disant que cette fois ci je vais y arriver. Je veux partager, je veux vous amuser et vous instruire.

En premier lieu, bienvenu, toutes et tous. Pour ceux (et celles) qui me connaissent pas, je vous convie a la lire mes posts prétendants, cela  pourras p-e vous donner un aperçu de ma personnalité, mon enthousiasme et ma passion pour la technologie. Dans les prochaines  semaines, j’essayerais de vous entretenir sur divers sujets qui me tiennent a cœur, me surprennent et me passionnent.

Pour l’instant, et bien, je vous  parle de mon quotidien, ma vie, mes ennuis et mon parcours a travers l'univers de la vie sur cette belle planète, que je partage avec me frères et sœurs de toutes nationalités, religions et politiques.
